Animal Husbandry 2012
As habitat loss and other pressures caused by human threaten species in their natural habitat, and care of the animals in captivity is becoming more important. Chicago Zoological Society and similar organizations are the guardians of wild animals in captivity, and maintain the health and well-being of their animal charges.
What happens in the care of the zoo animals? Answers lie somewhere in nature. The best way to care for animals in captivity is to understand the biological species in the wild, to understand the behavior and physical adaptations, diet specifications, and social needs and space.
At the Brookfield Zoo, animal husbandry practices, seeks to create an environment that supports the growth and development of animals. It has been dealing with these animals in natural social groups. For example, gorillas are naturally social and live in groups in the wild. Gorillas in the world are in the group round, with Silverback male, several adult females and their offspring all living together.
